Narrative Design for new MMO

I have been working as Senior Narrative designer on the new MMORPG, Hyperspace, being developed by Scottish games company Carbon Based Life Forms.

Taking existing lore and expanding upon it, we’ve created new alien species with their distinctive cultures, home planets and even languages. New characters have emerged and tantalising gameplay elements are being added all the time.

This is my 5th foray in to the world of games following on from create-your-own adventure books, Moshi Monsters walk-throughs, work on a Doctor Who VR game, as well as storylines and characters for a Chinese-based episodic mobile game.

This has been a much deeper dive, however, working alongside a team of junior Narratives and I have loved it.

Watch this space for more games work to come…

Final volume of Lost In Space graphic novel coming this December

The final volume of my Lost In Space tie-in series of graphic novels is being published by Simon & Schuster on December 14th. You can find details of the publication on the product page.

The release dqte is important as it links to when the third and final series of the hit Netflix TV show will drop.

This volume also collects all the previous stories with amazing art by Zid and El Garing and features the epic two-part adventure, When Worlds Collide, that sees the classic crew of the 1960s Jupiter meet their modern counterparts in a story that celebrates all eras of Lost in Space!

I had a blast writing the crossover event story and the art makes it look like the panels are frames of an actual filmed episode with two of everyone (Will, Penny, the Robot, Dr Smith, and the whole crew) in slightly different guises and the return of an old foe from the classic TV show – with my own twist on things…

Not to be missed!

All episodes of ROB are now available to view for free online.

My reimagining of the Robin Hood folklore for Hollywood studio, Legendary Entertainment, is now finished and all episodes are available to view online at Webtoon.

You can find the episodes via ROB’s own landing page on the online digital platform.

There is a limited amount of time ROB will available in this format before before the episodes are taken down and Legendary Comics publish a hard copy of the story in the form of graphic novels.

ROB is Launched on Webtoon – Upwards of 40k Subscribers Already!

My new IP, ROB – based on the Robin Hood mythology – was launched on Thursday 4th February at 1am GT (Wednesday 3rd at 5pm PT) with Legendary Entertainment dropping the first three chapters on the Webtoon digital platform.

The title has proved a runaway success, with ROB already attracting over 43,000 subscribers and an average rating of 8.9, it is currently at no.19 on the “Fantasy” chart out of the hundreds or even thousands of titles on the site.

You can read ROB for free here on the Webtoon site or download the app to view on your smartphone or tablet. You only have to create an account, which is also free.

New 7th Doctor Comic Announced by Titan

It has been announced at the Gallifrey One Doctor Who convention in Los Angeles that I will be writing for the 7th Doctor this summer as part of a new mini-series.

BBC Worldwide Americas and Titan Comics have announced that the Seventh Doctor is back, in comic form.

This brand-new three-part comic series stars the Seventh Doctor, as played by Sylvester McCoy, alongside classic companion Ace, played by Sophie Aldred.

Released in June 2018 with a double-sized first issue, DOCTOR WHO: THE SEVENTH DOCTOR #1, is written by Seventh Doctor script editor Andrew Cartmel, and writer Ben Aaronovitch who wrote the seventh Doctor stories Remembrance of the Daleks and Battlefield. There will also be a back-up strip written by me and I am thrilled to be working with Jessica Martin who will be providing the artwork,

Jessica played the part of Mags in the 1989 TV story The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. Her character will be the lead in a story entitled AS TIME GOES BY.

The lead story involves an unknown alien intelligence in orbit around the Earth, astronauts under attack, and a terrifying, mysterious landing in the Australian interior. The future of the world itself at stake. Counter Measures activated. The Seventh Doctor and Ace are slap bang in the middle of it all! This is OPERATION VOLCANO!

Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel return to the TARDIS, on the 30th anniversary of fan-favorite episode Remembrance of the Daleks with The Seventh Doctor comics, and are joined by illustrator Christopher Jones(The Third Doctor) and colorist Marco Lesko (Robotech, The Ninth Doctor) to bring astonishing twists and turns to the lives of the Seventh Doctor, and his companions, with Titan’s new comic series.

The debut issue comes with four variant covers to collect: three art covers by artists Alice X. ZhangSimon Myers, and Christopher Jones, and a photo cover by Will Brooks.

First off, I had a great time at MCM London Comic Con. Thank you to all of you who came along to my talk and got books signed afterwards. It was lovely to see some old faces and meet some new ones, too. Thanks, too, to the lovely Sarah Garnham and Ben McConnell from BBC Books for support and Tess Henderson (As ever) for organising. We had between 70-100 people in the room and another thank you to the brilliant Elisar Cabrera who stepped into provide interviewing and moderating duties.

The covers for the final instalment of my first story in Titan’s 12th Doctor year 3 run have been revealed. And they look magnificent. There’s a wonderful Missy cover (LOVE Missy) by Andy Walker and two great Bill ones (LOVE Bill) by Will Brooks and Claudia Ianniciello:

If you missed me at MCM Comic Con and still want to get your hands on a copy of my BBC Book, Doctor Who: Myths & Legends – BEFORE it is officially released on the 29th June, then you need to pop along to the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Saturday 17th June at 1pm when I will be signing the book alongside Steve Tribe who will be signing his Brief History of the Time Lords.

A couple of the amazing Adrian Salmon’s illustrations for Myths & Legends have been appearing online to tie in with episodes of Doctor Who series 10 with similar content. So far, we’ve seen Missy and a Female Ice Warrior who both appear in the book:
